B.O.L.D. City Summit Leadership Academy aims to provide valuable leadership experience to 7th and 8th grade students in Jacksonville, Florida.
Too often the standard for success for our students is to leave their city and community behind to find a better future. Bright students are urged to “get out” and sadly they do. We aim to change this narrative and invest students in making Jacksonville the Bold New City of the South and to see themselves as valuable, contributing members of our community.
B.O.L.D. City Summit Leadership Academy equips students with vital leadership development while also investing them in their city and communities. Students attending the summit develop and sharpen essential leadership skills needed for academic and career success. The program focuses on power, the power of self and the power of community, through a practical, everyday lens. Leadership is brought to life through innovative curriculum and community partnerships with Girls Inc., 100 Black Men of Jacksonville, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Job Crops. Throughout the day students are mentored by community members as well as college bound high schools students. Finally, students work together to solve issues within their communities in a community organizing simulation, which makes this a truly unique and engaging experience.
Last year’s inaugural B.O.L.D. City Summit Leadership Academy hosted 75 middle school students and 25 high school mentors at Andrew Jackson High School. This year, on May 22nd, 2015 we plan to do it all over again with a total of 100 middle school students and 40 high school mentors. Our partnerships are stronger, our numbers are larger, and our impact is growing. We know that this project has the potential to impact our city for generations to come. Our students today will be our better tomorrow.
We are asking for your time and your donations today to ensure that this remarkable opportunity will continue to grow and impact our students and our city. We plan to increase the number of middle school students in attendance by 25 students each year and the number of high school students participating by 20 students each year. This pace sets up to have 225 middle school participants and 140 high school mentors at the 2020 B.O.L.D. City Summit Leadership Academy with an alumni network of more than 1,500 change agents.
The funds raised will be used to create local B.O.L.D. City Summit chapters at partner schools, to expand the summit and curriculum to facilitate our increasing numbers, and to create and sustain a vibrant alumni community. This will allow us to continue to connect students with community leaders, mentors, and most importantly each other through seminars, internships, and service learning projects. We want B.O.L.D. City Summit to be a consistent presence in schools and communities with the Leadership Academy being an annual culminating event for students to hone their leadership skills and engage with the community.
We know we have been successful when our students go to and through college and CHOOSE to live and work in Jacksonville. We want them to open businesses here, work here, live here, educate their children here, become leaders here, and most importantly boldly have their dreams become realizations in Jacksonville, Florida.
